Installing a replacement basket strainer in your kitchen sink is a very simple plumbing task. Here’s the basic steps. After removing your drain assembly and old strainer from the sink, clean up the sink hole. Now prepare the new strainer by applying a bead of plumbers putty to flange of the strainer.

Next, insert the strainer into the sink hole. Apply pressure so the excess putty squeezes out and the flange is centered and well seated. Be sure to remove the excess putty from underside of the sink before continuing. The rubber gasket goes on next, then the fiber ring. Without the fiber ring the metal nut will bind against the rubber gasket making it difficult to tighten. The nut goes on last. A special tool is made just for tightening the strainer nut.

Now you can reattach your trap and drain assembly. Run a water test to check for leaks.
If your shopping for strainers you’ll soon realize they are available in different patterns. Some are deeper then others (notice the differences in the images) but the diameter are the same for kitchen sinks.
